Gene J. Swafford, age 82, of LaVergne, TN, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2014. 
 Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:00PM at Woodfin Chapel in Smyrna. Brother Bill Thomason will officiate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with military honors.
 Mr. Swafford is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Lucy Perigo Swafford; sons, Jay Swafford and his wife Donna of Springfield, TN and Wayne Swafford and his wife Regina of Mt. Juliet, TN; daughters, Darlene Dalton and her husband Ken of Smyrna, TN and Anita Henley and her husband Randy of LaVergne, TN; brothers, David Swafford and his wife Joyce of Lyles, TN and Tyrone Swafford of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Nichole, Jackie, Chelsey, Alaina, Kelci, and Crawford; and two great grandchildren, Rylee and Lauren along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Josiah Hurt Swafford and Lola Mai Fakes Swafford; and two brothers and three sisters.
 Mr. Swafford was a Deacon of LaVergne First Baptist Church. He was a proud veteran having served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a retired fabricator with Quality Industry and had also worked with Iron Workers Local 492.
 Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
 Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00PM to 8:00PM and Thursday from 11:00AM to 1:00PM all at Woodfin Chapel, 203 N. Lowry in Smyrna.

James Junior Swafford

Age 62, of Cleveland, passed away Monday, July 12, 2010, at his residence.

He was employed with Astec Industries where he had worked for 27 years.

He was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church. He loved hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Myrtle Bain Swafford.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Swafford of Cleveland; son, David Swafford of San Francisco, Calif.; and sister, Diane Crisp of Texas.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, 2010, in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Davis and Pastor Dusty Caldwell officiating.

Dorothy Swafford DEARDORFF, 

 Age 83 of Nashville, passed away August 26, 2009. Mrs. Deardorff was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Jefferson and Ella Swafford, and husband, Robert C. Deardorff. She is survived by 7 children, 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Thelma "T" Swafford, 
80, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at Consulate Health Care in Chattanooga.

A native of McMinn County, and a longtime resident of Cleveland, she was a daughter of the late Pearl R. and Anna Eaton Swafford. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Gladys Davis, Elsie Palmer, Choley Townsend and Gertrude Swafford; and one brother, Fred Swafford. She was a member of Meadowfork Baptist Church, and was retired from Charleston Hosiery Mill.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Teresa Lane of Chattanooga, and Jackie and Marlene Lane of Nashville; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Jarrett Lane of Nashville; and four sisters and one brother-in-law, Shirley Kyle of Athens, Bobbie Jean Swafford of Etowah, and Vesta and Victor Diaz and Bertha Mae Everett, all of Exeter, Calif.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with Mike Conery officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowfork Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Danny Lane, Tommy Cavitt, Jarrett Lane and Jackie Lane.

Jackie Dale Swafford, 

49, died June 19, 2009, near Boston, Ark. He was born Aug. 23, 1959, in Oark to Robert Dempsey and Elizabeth Sarah Criss Swafford.

He was a logger and a Baptist.

Survivors include one son, Cody Swafford of Pettigrew; his mother, Elizabeth Swafford of Pettigrew; two brothers, Billy Swafford of Pettigrew, and Joe Swafford and wife Missy of Crosses; four sisters, Betty Byers of Pettigrew, Rita Grigsby and husband Rick of Hunt, Louise Ashlock and husband Junior of Clarksville, and Cindy Shepard and husband David of Coal Hill; 15 nephews and nieces; 17 great-nephews and great-nieces; and one great-great-niece.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cave Mountain Church with Larry Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Cave Mountain Cemetery under the direction of Brashears Funeral Home in Huntsville.

Mary Helen Davis Swafford

90, of Hixson, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009, at a local health care facility.

She was of the Baptist faith. She loved her children and family deeply.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Swafford; son, Johnny Davis; daughter, Joyce Curvin; great-grandson, Andrew Davis; sisters, Vivian Dobbs, Ruby Doyle, Reba Perkey and Katheleen Johnson.

She is survived by sons, Cecil Davis, Larry (Brenda) Davis; daughters, Sheila (Morris) Eustice and Brenda (Macky) Dodd; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral service will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2009, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Don Lasley officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Albert Francis "Curley" Swafford,  

having entered this life on Jan. 10, 1920, departed from it March 20, 2009.

He was the son of the late Jarrett and Bertha Taylor Swafford.

A native of Polk County, he had lived the last eight years at McMinn Memorial Nursing Home in Etowah.

A man who was well-liked and respected by those who knew him, he was noted for his honesty, integrity, loyalty and content of character. To whatever work he put his hand, he did with diligence and enthusiasm; giving no less that his best effort. Hunting and "making a garden" were two of his loves and he did both with equal success.

He served his country during World War II. From the beaches of Normandy through the frozen snow of the Battle of the Bulge into the heart of Germany, he served with Patton's 3rd Army with sacrifice, skill and strength, returning home only after victory had been achieved.

His loving wife of 37 years, Alene Victoria Dalton Swafford, preceded his passing; as did grandsons, Adam Stillwell and Rusty Swafford; a brother, Oliver Swafford; and two sisters: Ethelene Hamby and Helen Dalton.

Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Buddy and Maragret Swafford of Old Fort; nine children and their spouses: Charlene and Ronny Lewis of Benton, Sharion and John Stillwell of Benton, Frances and Mark Williams of Linsdale, Scott and Cynthia Swafford of Delano, Haskell and Cindy Swafford of Etowah, Ted and Sarah Swafford of Benton, Nathan and Natalie Swafford of Delano, Morris and Deborah Swafford of Old Fort and Jeffery and Annette Swafford of Etowah; 14 grandsons; eight granddaughters; 11 great-granddaughters; four great-grandsons; and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 23, 2009, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Wetmore Baptist Church in Delano with the funeral service to follow. The Rev. Homer Belcher will officiate.

Interment will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Brock Cemetery in Polk County. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Ruth Swafford Carpenter, 90, died at her home on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009.

She was a member of Summer City Baptist Church and retired from Robinson Manufacturing.

Etta Elizabeth "Betty" Swafford, 76, of Sarasota, Fla., and a former resident of Cleveland, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, in a Florida medical center.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Fike Funeral Home prior to the service.

Mary Agnes Morgan Swafford, 82, of Chattanooga, died on Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008.

She was born in Soddy, was a graduate of Red Bank High School and graduated from the University of Chattanooga. She taught science, math and chemistry for many years in the Tennessee school system. She spent the majority of her teaching career at Hixson Junior High School teaching ninth grade science. 

She was a longtime resident of Sumitt View Senior Community where she was involved in many social activities. Her favorite activity was bridge. She spent many hours playing bridge and even taught bridge to residents and staff at Summitt View.

Due to her love of teaching science she has donated her body to Vanderbilt Medical School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tollett James Swafford; and her parents “Buck” and Mae Morgan.

Survivors include her son, Tollett James “Jim” Swafford Jr, Chattanooga; daughter, Rebecca Ann “Becky” Hunt, Soddy-Daisy; beloved grandson, Tollett “Ryan” Swafford, Los Angeles, Ca.; daughter-in-law, Lynn Swafford Chattanooga; son-in-law, Jerry Hunt, Soddy-Daisy; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2-4:30 p.m. on Monday at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home.

Martha Dean Swafford, 79, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Center Point Baptist Church where she was very active in the singing ministry.

She was employed with Bendix for 17 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Coleman and Ethel Lee Haney Coleman; granddaughter, Tara Hooper; brothers: Jimmy Coleman and Wayne Coleman and a sister, Billie Hysinger.

Survivors include her loving husband, David Swafford of Cleveland; daughters: Judy Swafford Walker, and husband, Bobby of Murphy, N.C., and Renee Murphy of Cleveland; brother, Ronald Coleman, and wife, Bonnie, of Cleveland; and sister, Peggy Brooks of Cleveland; grandchildren: Robin Bowling, Toshia Worley and Stephanie Withrow; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Caywood officiating.

Paul E. Swafford, 82, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Thursday, October 23, 2008 in a local hospital. He was a descendant of one of the original pioneer families of McMinn County. He worked in the porcelain enamel industry for over 30 years. He was superintendent at Brown Stove Works and later worked as a sales and service engineer for PEMCO Products of Baltimore, MD, handling the southeast region. Mr. Swafford was a fifty year member of the Cleveland Masonic Lodge #134 F&AM and Chattanooga Scottish Rite.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Landon and Julie Poteet Swafford; brother, Edward Swafford and sister, Nora Clark.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Effie McReynolds Swafford of Cleveland; daughter, Mary-Ellen Loveless and husband, Jonathan of Athens, GA; grandson, William Coleman Loveless of Athens, GA; brothers: Winston Swafford, Horace Swafford and wife, Edith all of Riceville, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Reverend Debbie Stokes officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Cemetery with Steve Swafford, Donald Swafford, Mike Myers, Beau Matthews, Roy Quinn and Aaron Keller will be serving as pallbearers. A white dove release ceremony concluding the service.

His family will receive friends from 2-5 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home with a Masonic Service at 5:00 P.M and from 12-2 P.M. Monday prior to the service.

Anna Lou Swafford, 63, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at her home. 

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her son, Darren Swafford; parents, Robert T. and Lora Elizabeth Myers; brother, Billy H. Myers and sister, Roberta Fay Brock.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis Swafford of Cleveland; son, Darrell Swafford and his wife, Amanda, of Bryant, Ala.; grandson, Declan Swafford of Bryant, Ala.; sister, Shirley Woods of Cleveland; brothers: J.D. Myers, Ray Myers, Willis Myers, all of Cleveland, and J.C. Myers of Calhoun; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Pettengill officiating.

Interment will follow in Goforth Family Cemetery in Benton.

Louise Fay Swafford, 60, of Chattanooga, died on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, in a local hospital.

Funeral services will be on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Taylor Funeral Home.

Burial will be on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, in Chattanooga National Cemetery.





 Charlie Swafford, 60, of 1003 Stockell St., truck driver, who died Tuesday, July 26, 1966, at a local infirmary after an extended illness, were today at Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home.  
Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Born in Davidson County, he had lived here all of his life. 
 He was a son of Mrs. Susie Swafford and the late George Asberry Swafford. 

He was married to the former Miss Mamie Neely who also survives.  Other survivors are two daughters, Miss Kathleen Swafford, Nashville; Mrs. Joan Lovvorn, Kansas City; four sons, Robert Eugene Swafford, David Roy Swafford, Allen Swafford, and William Swafford, all of Nashville; three sisters Mrs. Florence Houchin, Mrs. Nancy Norris, and Mrs. Irene Cook, all of Nashville; four brothers Joe Swafford, Roy Swafford, Houston Swafford and , and Ed Swafford, all of Nashville and four grandchildren. 

Remains were at the funeral home of Phillips-Robinson Funeral Co. where funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at 11:00 o'clock.  Active pallbearers- Ray Elrod, Henry Elrod, Ronald Elrod, Bo Sexton, Pudgy Jacobs, and Tommy Pickens.  Interment - Woodlawn Cemetery.




Gus Swafford, 92, of Chattanooga, died on Sunday, July 27, 2008.

Born in Athens, Tn., he lived most of his life in Chattanooga. Mr. Swafford retired from East Brainerd Lumber Company. He was a member of Hamilton Baptist Church, and Masonic Fidelity Lodge no. 558.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy and John Swafford; wife, Dorothy Swafford.

Survivors include his four daughters, Lucille Jones, Barbara Moody, Geneva (James) Conley, Carol (Tom) Mann; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2-9 p.m. on Tuesday, and on Wednesday from noon until time of service at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Suda Mae Womac Swafford96, of Cleveland and formerly of McMinn County, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2008, at her daughter's residence.

A native and longtime resident of McMinn County, she was preceded in death by her husband Roy L. Swafford; parents, John and Fannie Wilson Womac; a daughter, Bea Day; brother Oscar Womac; and sisters: Ollie and Ida Swafford. 

She owned and operated Swafford's Grocery in the Idlewild community for many years.

She is survived by son, Rondal "Ronnie" Swafford of Athens: daughters and sons-in-law: Reva and Gene West of Athens, Theresa and James Hope, Sue and Pete Skinner, all of Cleveland, and Emma Wilson of Redondo Beach, Calif.: brothers and sister-in-law: Willard and Bertha Womac of Athens, and J.D. and Ruby Womac of Decatur; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2008, in the Chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home in Athens.

Burial will follow in Idlewild Cemetery.

 L.C. Swafford, 79, of Fayetteville died
 Sunday, May 11, 2008, at his home. He was born Feb. 10, 1929, at Anderson
 Flat, the son of Walter and Ethel Still Swafford.

He was the retired owner of Swafford's Barber Shop and a member of the
 First United Pentecostal Church. He was an Army veteran of the Korean
 War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He also received the Korean
 Service Medal with one bronze star, Combat Infantry Badge and United
 Nations Service Medal.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Henley Swafford; three daughters,
 Lucreta Hampton and her husband, Ron, of West Fork, Susan Long and her
 husband, Larry, of Fayetteville, Kim Reynolds and her husband, Steven, of
 Fayetteville; one brother, Veldon Swafford and his wife, Wanda, of Elm
 Springs; one sister, Rita Purdey and her husband, Paul, of Harrison;
 five grandchildren, Devin Long of Fayetteville, Jerome Long and his wife,
 Sheila, of Dover, Ashley Hampton of West Fork, Carey Hampton and his
 wife, Kristen, of West Fork, Breanna Reynolds of Fayetteville; two
 great-grandchildren, Keygan Long of Fayetteville, Peyton Hampton of West
 Fork.

 Fayetteville.

ADA BELLE SWAFFORD


Ada Belle Carroll Swafford, 94, a resident of Cleveland, passed away
 Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008.

She was a graduate of the class of 1935 at Bradley Central High School
 and a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Before her retirement, she was employed as a seamstress with American
 Uniform for 20 years.

She was the daughter of the late William L. and Missouri Pence Carroll.
 She was also preceded in death by her husband, Aulbi Swafford; son,
 James Dale Swafford; and daughter, Sue Gail Swafford; several sisters and
 brothers: Mamie Caywood, Ora Collins, Frances Jackson, Ruth Ingram,
 Herbert Carroll and Theodore Carroll.

Survivors include two sons and their spouses: Larry and Pat Swafford of
 Ocoee and Reggie and Brenda Swafford of Cleveland; special
 daughter-in-law, Martha Moses of Cleveland; five grandchildren: Kevin Swafford and
 wife, Stacy, Chris Swafford, Eric Swafford and wife, Nikki, Jennifer
 Hannah and Dalenna Wilson and husband, Clint; nine great-grandchildren;
 one brother, Roy Carroll and wife, Dorothy, of Cleveland; and several

Sergeant Major Curtis B. Swofford, 89, of Athens, Ga., formerly of
 Harrison, died on Sunday, January 13, 2008 in a hospital there. 

He was born in Fife, Ga., on May 7, 1918 to the late Moses and Lee
 Coleman Swofford. 

Mr. Swofford retired from the United States Army in 1968 having served
 in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He received many commendations
 during his 25 years of service including the Bronze Star. He retired as

He resided in Chattanooga until four years ago when he moved to Athens
 to live with his daughter and son-in-law. While in Chattanooga, he
 attended Bayside Baptist church, was with Emanuel Sunday School Class and
 did visitation for the church. He was an active mason and a member of
 AUSA. 

He is survived by his wife, Helen Mixson Swofford; one daughter, Susan
 (Tom) Gearhart of Athens; two sons, Robert Swofford and Don Swofford of
 Chattanooga; two sisters, Emma Ruth Millians of Augusta, Ga.; Valeria
 Cain of Monroe, Ga.; one brother, Lehman (Evelyn) Mathews of Macon,
 Ga.; four grandsons, one granddaughter, four great-grandsons and three
 great-granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the North Chapel
 with Rev. Bob Stitts officiating. Burial will follow at Chattanooga
 National Cemetery with full military honors.

Bertha A. Swafford, 87, a resident of Benton, passed away Thursday,
 Jan. 10, 2008, in a Bradley County health care facility.

 She was a member of the Cloverleaf Baptist Church.  

She was the daughter of the late Luther Fannin and Gertie Alloway
 Fannin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Swafford. 

Survivors include her children and spouses: Harold Swafford of
 Copperhill, Lee and Lois Swafford of Cleveland, Diane and Glenn Holloway of
 Chattanooga and Marline Raines of Old Fort; stepson, Bill Swafford of
 Englewood; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one
 great-great-grandchild; sister, Faye Parker of Hickory, N.C.; brother and spouse, Vernon
 and Linda Fannin of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at
 Cloverleaf Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Higgins officiating.

 McMinn County with a white dove release ceremony concluding the service.

Thelma Wiley Swafford, 85, a resident of Cleveland, passed away
 Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, in a local hospital.
She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.She was a member of the Eastern Star for 25 years.
She was the daughter of the late Andrew “Andy” Wiley and Jenny
 Brock Wiley. She was also preceded in death by her husbands: Earl Bellamy
 and Arnold Watson; and brothers and sisters: Wallace Wiley and wife,
 Ona, Aline Moss and husband, Burchett, Evelyn Keshe and husband, Frank,
 Reba Eaves and husband, Letcher, Paul Wiley and David Wiley and wife,
 Nancy.Survivors include a son,  Gary Paul Bellamy and wife, Jodi;
 grandchildren: Matthew Bellamy, Jodillean Bellamy, and Kirstops Bellamy, all of
 San Antonio, Texas, Gary Bellamy of Hurricane, W. Va.; sister, Billie

Mary Frances Swafford, 87, of Dayton, died at home Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, while surrounded by her family.
Mary Frances (Lee) Swafford was born in Pikeville on August 9, 1920, the daughter of the late Patrick F.
and Lillian D. Lee and was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, C.P. Swafford; her son, Phil
Swafford; and her brothers, Dennis Lee, Howard Lee and John Brown Lee. Mary Frances graduated with honors
from Patten High School in Bledsoe County in 1937. She went on to graduate from the University of Tennessee
Junior College at Martin, Tenn., in 1939, and from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1941, with a
degree in Home Economics. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. After graduating, she worked as a Home
Demonstration Agent in Pulaski, Tenn. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in
Dayton, United Methodist Women, the Dayton Garden Club, and volunteered as a Gray Lady at Rhea Medical
Center. Mary Frances is survived by her son Sam (Cyndie) Swafford of Dayton; daughter-in-law, Pat
Swafford Arnold of Dayton; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mary Frances
are being held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. John Anderson and Nathan Parker
officiating. Burial will be held in the Rhea Memory Gardens. The family will be served by the Vanderwall

Louise Hall Swafford, 78, of Riceville, died Monday morning, Sept. 17,
 2007, at her residence.

A native of Hebron, Ala., and a resident of McMinn County since 1969,
 she was a daughter of the late Ira Lee and Mattie Parcus Hall.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Retha Davison.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Winston Swafford of
 Riceville; son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Danita Swafford of Riceville;
 sister, Cecile Caldwell of Sylacauga, Ala.; brother and sister-in-law,

Fred R. Swafford, 63, of Calhoun, TN died Monday, July 30, 2007, at his
 residence.

He was a native of the Claxton community near Athens and was a resident
 of Calhoun for the past 35 years.

He was a son of the late Pearl and Anna Belle Eaton Swafford.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be sadly
 missed.

He was a cabinet builder and installer for more than 40 years.

He loved fishing, enjoyed watching Nascar racing, football, kickboxing,
 spending time with his family and playing the guitar and singing.

He was preceded in death by his sisters: Chloey Townsend, Elsie Palmer,
 Gertrude Swafford and Gladys Davis.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Caroll Womac Swafford of
 Calhoun; daughter and son-in-law, Caroline and Carl Buckner of Cleveland; son
 and daughter-in-law, Teddy and Karen Swafford of Birchwood; four
 wonderful grandchildren, whom he loved dearly: Ashley Buckner, McKinsey
 Buckner, Tyland Thomas and Jake Swafford; sisters and brother-in-law:
 Shirley Kyle of Athens, Bobbie Swafford of Etowah, Bertha Mae Everett and
 Vest and Victor Diaz, all of Exeter, Calif., Thelma Swafford of
 Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.

DAYTON (TN)  Charles Philip "C.P." Swafford, 88, died at his home early 
Sunday, May 27, 2007, while surrounded by his family.

C.P. was born in Pikeville, Tenn., on Oct. 18, 1918, the son of the 
late Samuel and Della (Hutcheson) Swafford and was also preceded in death 
by his son, Phil Swafford; brother, Frank Swafford; and two sisters, 
Helen Burns and Mary Joe Beckham.

C.P. was a graduate of the Bledsoe County High School class of 1936. He 
then attended Emory & Henry University and University of Tennessee- 
Knoxville and then earned his law degree at Cumberland University in 
Lebanon, graduating in 1946. He served his country with the U.S. Army Air 
Corps as a captain and piloted a B-17 during World War II in the European 
Theater. Later, C.P. retired in 1970 as a lieutenant colonel with the 
U.S. Air Force Reserves after 20 years of service.

C.P. lived in Dayton most of his life, where he was an attorney and had 
also served as an assistant district attorney with the 18th Judicial 
Circuit of Tennessee. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist 
Church in Dayton. C.P. was a founder of the Dayton Rotary Club and a 
recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award. He also was a founder of 
Dayton Golf and Country Club and was an avid golfer.

C.P. is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Frances (Lee) Swafford ; 
his son, Sam (Cyndie) Swafford, of Dayton; daughter-in-law, Pat 
Swafford Amold, of Dayton; six grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services for C.P. will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral 
home chapel with the Rev. John Anderson officiating.

Burial will be in Rhea Memory Gardens with full military honors.

LoEtta Masengill Swafford, 96, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, went 
home to be with the Lord Wednesday morning, March 28, 2007.
She was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
She was the daughter of the late Arthur Masengill and Agnes Knittel 
Masengill. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Swafford; 
four sons: Charles, Wayne, Dewitt, and Billy Swafford; one daughter, 
Betty Fern Swafford; three sisters: Flora, Edna, and Juanita; four 
brothers: Earl, Frank, Ernest, and Chester. 
Survivors include five sons: Odell Swafford, Clifford Swafford, Raymond 
Swafford, and Daniel Swafford, all of Cleveland, and Harold Swafford of 
Lexington, S.C.; three daughter-in-laws: Jennie, Martha, and Ann. They 
will all miss her greatly; 11 grandchildren: Jenny Lyn, Rachel, David, 
Kim, Dale, Jill, Eron, Kelli, Monique, Denisa and Brian; 20 
great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Lamon; one 
brother, Louie Masengill; and several nieces and nephews.

Estelle A. Swafford, 89, a resident of Georgetown, passed away Sunday morning, Oct. 8, 2006, at the family residence. 

She was born in Birchwood and was the daughter of the late Frank Allison and Tennie Beavers Allison. She was also preceded in death by her husband, David Swafford; four brothers; and four sisters. 

She was a member of Gamble Road Church of God.

Survivors include four daughters: Lucille Posey and her husband, W.J., of Georgetown, Icyle Shadden of Chattanooga, Jewel Frazier of Birchwood, and Mary Sue McKinney of Ooltewah; two sons: Hack Allison and his wife, Evelyn, of Georgetown, and Chris Swafford and his wife, Wendy, of Georgetown; 19 grandchildren; many more great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.  A total of 16 sets of “five generations†survive.

Chester L. Swafford, 84, of Ooltewah, died Monday, June 19, 2006. 

He was a native of Cleveland and was a resident of Hamilton County for most of his life. 

He was a mason and also a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II. 

He was a member of Oakwood Church of God of Prophecy. 

His wife, Loretta Swafford preceded him in death. 

Survivors include several nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, Buck Davis, all of the Chattanooga area.

Randy Carroll Swafford, 51, of Chattanooga, died on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at his residence.

He was born in Athens, TN, to the late Harley Swafford and Edith Burrows. He was preceded in death by his stepfathers, Jack Burrows and Knox Reese; and sister, Betty Huffstutter. He was of the Baptist faith.

James was preceded by death with his present wife before death, Beverly Phillips Swafford on April 6, 2006. James has 5 daughters, Brenda, Margaret, Deena, Tia, and step-daughter Jeanne with several grandchildren & great grandchildren. James was born and raised in Nashville, Tennesse and had daughters, Brenda and Margaret and with there mother, Veda. Then James married Lorene Rachael Russell... which they moved to Vallejo, California where Deena and Tia were born and he stayed in Vallejo till his death. His wife, Lorene Russell Swafford passed away in 1993. James worked on the Mare Island Shipyard for some 30 yrs, which he was a lead painter in his shop  #71 and was very good at his job. James was a great father, husband, friend, and grandpa. James married Beverly Phillips and the family expanded with step-kids. His hobby's was working in his woodshop at home after retirement, making small pieces of furniture and outdoor decor and home project's. James father was, Robert Ervin Henry Samuel John L. Sullivan Swafford (deceased) and a brother Willie  Noel Matthew Swafford Sr., and sister Geneva Swafford (deceased). James Howard Swafford's ashes were layed to rest in the waters near Angel Island, upon his living request.






Cory A. Swafford, 27, died Saturday, March 11, 2006, in Burr Ridge, IL.

He was the beloved son of Patricia A. and the late Willard G. Swafford ; brother of Gerald Swafford and Kathy Swafford Davis; nephew of Rosetta Holt, of Missouri, and Trevor Ingram, of Georgia; and great-nephew of Thelma Knox, Herman Ross Jr., Norma Williams, Jimmy Allen, of Chattanooga, and Betty Ross, of Georgia.

Cory will be missed by a loving group of friends in the Chicago area where he lived and worked, as well as other family in the Chattanooga area.

SPRINGDALE,AR  -- Gilbert James "Gib" Swofford, 74, of Springdale died March 12, 2006, at Northwest Medical Center-Springdale. He was born June 15, 1931, in Viola, Mo., to Virgil and Bessie Roberts Swofford. He was a 30-year resident of the area and enjoyed working on cars. He was preceded in death by two daughters, and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, James Swofford of Effingham, Ill.; three daughters, Dena Henshilwood and husband Jeff of Gentry, Bonnie McLane and husband Steve of Effingham and Edna Hendriex of Effingham; one sister, Leona Faye Ahearn of Green Forest; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McCullough Church in Viola, Mo. Burial will follow in McCullough Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Sisco Chapel in Springdale.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.



James R. Swafford, better known as Jimmy, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2006.

He was born to the late Cletes G. and Mary Swafford on Feb. 19, 1934.

Jimmy, along with his wife Fay, owned and operated Fay Swafford Originals. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend.

He graduated from Bradley Central High School in the class of 1952, and was a member of Westwood Baptist Church. He was fond of the outdoors, and especially enjoyed trout fishing and hunting.

He served in the U.S. Army as a signalman with U.S. Forces Austria, was a member of the American Legion and The Veterans of Foreign Wars; and shall be remembered as an avid patriot and honorary member of the Special Forces Association. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Fay Swafford; son, Joel M. Swafford; brother, David Lynn Swafford and wife, Jean, of Tallahassee, Fla.; sister, Betty Swafford of Sarasota, Fla.; beloved granddaughter, Ashley L. Swafford; a new great-grandson, Coby J. Pritts; and special friend, Larry L. Brown.

Family and friends will gather for a time of remembrance today, March 13, 2006, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Fike Funeral Home.

Graveside service with military honors will be officiated by the Rev. Johnny Jones, Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Hilcrest Memorial Gardens.

Grace Swafford Withrow, 77, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at her home. 

As a graduate of Bradley Central High School, she continued her education at East Tennessee State University where she received a bachelor's degree. 

She was an elementary school teacher in this area for 35 years teaching at McDonald, Prospect and Bradley Junior High schools.

She was a member of Phillipi Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison Aaron and Grace Ingle Swafford; five brothers: Frank Swafford, Paul Swafford, Arthell Swafford, Clarence Swafford and J.T. Swafford; and two sisters: Justine Miller and Parilee Goins.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Clifford Withrow of Cleveland; one daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Donald Couch Jr. of Cleveland; one grandson, Joshua Couch of Knoxville; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 27, 2006, in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Jay Goins officiating.

Interment will follow in Lee Cemetery at White Oak with the release of a flock of white doves concluding the service.

Anna Jeanette Swafford, 82, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, in a local health care facility.

She was the daughter of the late Laura Leeann Shelton Key and William Oscar Key. Her husband, Hoyt Swafford; son, Douglas McDonald; sisters: Willa Dean Key, Inez Arrowood, Blanche Maynor, Ethel Norwood; and brothers: Raymond, Gene, Haskell, Claude, Fred and Floyd Key also preceded her in death.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Mary Lyde Swafford,  96, a resident of Cleveland, (TN) passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, in a local health care facility. 

She was a member of Westwood Baptist Church for 40 years.

She graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College and was a teacher at Prospect Elementary School for more than 35 years.

She was the daughter of the late Olin A. and Etta Sullivan Ramsey. She was also the widow of Cleetes G. Swafford, a well-known postal carrier. 

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Jim and Fay Swafford of Cleveland, David and Jean Swafford of Tallahassee, Fla.; one daughter, Betty Swafford of Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren: Joel Swafford of Cleveland, Alva Striplin and husband, Sam, Ramsey Swafford and Hudson Swafford, all of Tallahassee; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with minister John Jones officiating.

John Marion Swafford, 79, of McMinnville, (TN) passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, at NHC Healthcare in McMinnville.

He was a native of Cleveland and had lived in Murfreesboro most of his life before moving to McMinnville 20 years ago.

He attended Middle Tennessee State (teacher's college) 1947 to 1950 on a football scholarship and graduated with a bachelor of science degree. He attended George Peabody College for Teachers in 1951 and graduated with a master's of art degree.

He was a teacher and coach at Copperhill High School in Copperhill from 1951 to 1952; Central High School in Murfreesboro as a teacher and coach from 1953 to 1954; Copperhill High School as a teacher and coach in 1955; Benton (Polk County High School) as a teacher and coach from 1956 to 1957; Central High School, Murfreesboro, as a teacher and coach from 1958 to 1965; McMinnville High School as principal/superintendent 1966 to 1967; and Central High School in Murfreesboro as principal from 1967 to 1972.

He and fellow committee members designed and set up Oakland and Riverdale high schools. He was the principal at Oakland from 1972 to 1987. He was also the Tennessee state president of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and he later moved up to the National President of Secondary School Principals. He was very active with Tennessee State Sports Association and was involved with the Murfreesboro Housing Commission for many years. 

He was a member of First Methodist Church in McMinnville.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Port and Eliza Jane Jeffers Swafford; and sister, Bonnie Sue Swafford.

He is survived by wife, Martha Jean Phillips Swafford of McMinnville; daughters: Lisa (Terry) Haynes of Murfreesboro and Cherie (Mike) Lowery of Riverdale, Ga.; stepdaughter, Milla Kristian Gibbs; stepsons: James Thomas Sparkman and John Phillip Sparkman; grandchildren: Robert Jonathan Haynes, Kristin Nicole Haynes, David Gibbs, Jack Gibbs, Lauren Sparkman and Brooke Sparkman. 

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at Jennings and Ayers Chapel in Murfreesboro with Leaman Flatt and Bobby Modrall officiating.

Graveside service will follow at the Mountain View Cemetery in McMinnville at 12:30 p.m. with Robert Case officiating.

Marion Elizabeth Swafford, 80, born June 19, 1925, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, passed away this morning, Sept. 1, 2005, at the family residence.

She was a member of the New Prospect Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She had served in various teaching positions in Sunday school and vacation Bible school and had been recognized for more than 50 years of service in women's ministry.

She previously worked for many years at the Bradley County Courthouse in the Registrar of Deeds Office.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul A. Swafford; and her parents, O.C. and Ruth Price Murray.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Susan Swafford of Cleveland; granddaughter and husband, Ashley and Matt Graham of Memphis; grandson, Evan Swafford of Murfreesboro; sisters: Ruby Lynn and Joyce Price, both of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

After he designed and built his new home in a quiet hollow, he became an avid birder and stargazer. Michael is survived by his two children, Laura and Jonathon; three nieces, Anna, Michelle and Jacqueline Crosby; his mother, Mabel. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Christian Swafford who was stricken with apoplexy one week ago last 
Saturday, died last Friday evening and was buried Sunday in the 
Wisehart 
cemetery, one and a half miles north of town. He leaves five children, 
four 
sons and one daughter. He was sixty-eight years of age.

Wisehart Cemetery is right outside of New Lisbon, Indiana which is 
located 
in Henry County. Christian M. Swafford was a resident of New Lisbon at 
the 
time of his death.
Christian M. Swafford  surviving

Mary Swafford Rodman and Abraham Lincoln Swafford.
Christian Swafford's death certificate lists his father as 
Nathan Swafford.

Thomas Jefferson Swafford, who turned 104 his last birthday, July 22, died Tuesday at Bordeaux Hospital where he had been a patient for the last 15 years. Services will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Pettus-Owen and Wood Funeral Home. The Rev. M. E. Smith, pastor of Bellshire Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Swafford lived at 1213 Second Ave., N., before his hospitalization. For many years he fired bricks at Bush's Brickyard in North Nashville and later worked for Pure Oil Co. before his retirement. He married the former Ella Florence McCrary. She died in 1959. He is survived by a son, William Swafford Sr. of Dickson, Tenn., three daughters, Amy Peacher, Pleasantview, Tenn., Mary Donnelly (see above obit) and Dorothy Deardroff, Nashville; 30 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren, and 12
great-great-grandchildren.
